“‘It’s this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to is, and that our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.’”
-
-
-
I had a dream last night that I had to enroll in classes at my old high school, but there were no classes I had not taken before and I had received the highest grades in all of them. I left realizing that only the world could educate me further. (Or Harvard, I suppose. Good thing I’m starting my Masters there in less than a month…)

Book 29/52: The Death of Ivan Ilyich // Leo Tolstoy
-
-
-
“Not the real thing. Everything you lived by and still live by is a lie, a deception that blinds you from the reality of life and death.”
-
-
-
The death of a man who never really lived is a truly pathetic thing.

"Hello, do you mind if I take some photos in here?"

"Not at all—you know they’ve shot movies in here before."

"Really? I can see why."

"I asked the director if he wanted to move anything around and he didn’t want to."
“That makes sense, it really does look like a movie set in here.” I take a few photos. “Those sunflowers are beautiful, I’ll have to grab a couple.” I set them on the counter.

"I’ll give you three for the price of two—it’s bad luck to have just two." Carolyn then makes me this beautiful bouquet. (at Flowers on 15th)

“I remember my grandfather during one of my last visits before his death; he wanted to bless me, and I told him I didn’t believe in any of that and didn’t want it. It is hard for me to imagine that I felt good about behaving like that. I also remember that the smallest gesture of affection would bring a lump to my throat, whether it was directed at me or at someone else. Sometimes all it took was a scene in a movie. This juxtaposition of callousness an extreme sensitivity seemed suspicious even to me.”

-
-
Truly one of the most tragic stories. Loneliness, loss, love, and remorse. A beautifully written and heartbreaking novel.

Book 27/52: Game of Thrones // George RR Martin

“Then Lord Eddard is a man in ten thousand. Most of us are not so strong. What is honor compared to a woman’s love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in our arms … or the memory of a brother’s smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only humans, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy.”

Yikes, I am so far behind. Not only did I make the mistake of reading an 800 page book, but I’ve also been too busy with hiking and quitting my job to read as much as I need to. I really shouldn’t start A Clash of Kings…but I probably will. Oh well, I’ll catch up again in somehow…
